Most contractors do not need one radio model for every worker. They need a planned fleet: license-free or business-band handhelds for individual crews, durable digital radios for supers and safety, enough channels to keep trades from talking over each other, and a coverage plan for concrete cores, below-grade levels, tower cranes, and large horizontal sites.
How many radios does a construction site need?
Count roles and trades, not headcount. A radio assigned to a role, such as superintendent, safety, crane signal, or the concrete foreman, is more useful than a radio handed to a worker who may be off the clock or in a different building. These are planning ranges, not purchase requirements: structure type, site size, and existing radios all change the final count.

Choose radios by role and site
Crews and foremen
Individual trades need simple controls, loud clear audio in a noisy environment, and batteries that last a full shift. The Motorola BPR45 and Motorola CP100d are common starting points for crew and foreman radios.
Superintendents, GCs, and safety
These roles coordinate the whole site and need stronger durability, better range, and dust and moisture resistance. Consider the Motorola BPR50dx, the Motorola R2, or the Motorola XPR 3500e for supers and safety officers on medium and large sites.
High rise, heavy civil, and demanding coverage

Do construction site radios require an FCC license?
Most UHF business radios operate on frequencies licensed under FCC Part 90. Models such as the BPR45, CP100d, BPR50dx, R2, XPR 3500e, and R7 generally require an appropriate business-radio license and programming for the frequencies your company is authorized to use.
- License-required radios: UHF business radios operating on licensed Part 90 frequencies. One FCC license can cover a company operating across multiple job sites.
- Subscription-network radios: the TLK110 and TLK150 use WAVE PTX service over LTE and do not require a separate FCC radio-frequency license.
- License-free alternatives: certain 900 MHz radios can be license-free, but coverage inside concrete and steel structures should be checked before you commit a fleet to them.
A practical job site channel plan
A channel plan keeps routine trade chatter off the safety channel and stops one trade from covering another. A typical starting structure looks like this:

CTCSS or DCS tones reduce unwanted audio from other users on the same frequency, but they are not encryption and do not make a channel private. Contractors who need protected communication should discuss digital privacy and encryption during system design.
Where construction radios lose signal
Coverage problems on a job site come from the structure and the distance, not from the range number on a spec sheet. Walk these areas with a test radio before you size the fleet:
- Cast-in-place concrete cores and shear walls: dense structure blocks signal between floors and stair towers.
- Below-grade levels and parking structures: excavations and buried decks isolate crews from grade.
- Steel decks and metal buildings: large metal surfaces reflect and weaken signal.
- Heavy civil and large horizontal sites: roadwork and sitework can exceed reliable handheld-to-handheld range.
- Tower crane cab to ground: height and the surrounding structure make consistent contact harder.

Radios, safety, and OSHA on the job site
Two-way radios support coordination, but a radio by itself is not a lone-worker or man-down safety system, an OSHA evacuation alarm, or a replacement for 911. Your site safety plan should define who calls emergency services, who runs the safety channel, which channel stays reserved for urgent traffic, and how radio traffic fits your existing procedures.
- Reserve one channel for all-call and safety, and keep routine trade traffic off it.
- Use plain language and role names, not personal names, so anyone can pick up a radio and be understood.
- For crane work, radios support but do not replace the standard hand signals and the designated signal person.
- Test the emergency or programmable button on every model in the fleet.
- Confirm that new crews and second-shift workers know the channel plan and where radios are stored.
Multi-site contractors and fleet vehicles
UHF handhelds are built for local, on-site coverage. When communication has to reach a second site, a supplier, or a truck on the road, LTE push-to-talk radios connect users through a managed subscription network instead of a local frequency.

- Assign radios by role. A numbered radio belongs to the gate, the crane signal person, or the safety officer rather than one worker.

- Keep an inventory log. Record model, serial number, assigned role, battery condition, and repair history.
- Test daily. A quick radio check catches a low battery, damaged antenna, or programming problem before it matters.
- Plan for weather and dust. Consider remote speaker mics and hardened batteries, and review coverage as the structure rises and the site changes.
