Motorola R5 vs R7: choose for the job and the fleet

Choose around the functions your team will use. R5 is a starting point for crews that need durable push-to-talk and practical controls. R7 deserves a closer look when your requirements include its dual-microphone audio, greater water protection or a color display with full keypad. Both have non-display versions; buying an R7 does not automatically mean getting a screen.

The differences that affect your order

Battery figures are manufacturer typical values at maximum transmit power using 5% transmit, 5% receive and 90% standby. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are disabled; R7 also disables GNSS and option-board applications. These are not TWRG field-test results or guaranteed shift runtimes. Confirm the battery included with your selected package.

Match the radio to the worker

  • A crew using a small set of assigned channels: compare the non-display versions first. Decide whether R7's additional capabilities solve a requirement at your site.
  • A supervisor navigating many channels: compare R5's monochrome limited-keypad model with R7's color full-keypad model. Choose the interface and channel capacity the role needs.
  • A noisy or wet work area: shortlist the relevant audio and protection features, then assess the radio with the headset or speaker microphone your workers will actually use.
  • A long shift or shared radios: plan charging positions, spare batteries and handover time. A headline battery figure does not tell you how your team's transmit time affects runtime.

Before adding radios to an existing fleet

Matching the Motorola name or the channel number is not enough to confirm communication. Send us this information before placing a mixed-fleet order:

  1. Current radio model and band: include the complete model number from the label.
  2. Current setup: identify analog or digital operation, repeater/system model and any programming file you already have. We can identify the settings needed to assess compatibility.
  3. Required functions: list the features your team uses, including any system-specific features. Confirm R7 Capable/Enabled selections and required entitlements for the exact order.
  4. Accessories to retain: send battery, charger, headset and speaker-microphone part numbers. Reuse must be checked part by part; similar connectors do not establish compatibility.
  5. Deployment plan: give the number of users, shift length, sites and target date. If you want a staged replacement, start with a verified configuration before expanding it.

Common buying questions

Can R5 and R7 radios work together?

A mixed fleet needs a compatible band, operating mode, channel programming and supported system configuration. Send the exact models and system details for a compatibility check before ordering.

Should every employee receive the same model?

Different roles can justify different controls or features. A supervisor may need a display while another worker needs simple channel selection. Confirm that every proposed configuration supports the shared communication requirements.

Will the R7 cover more of my building?

Do not choose from an assumed mileage advantage. Building materials, antenna choice, frequency band, interference and repeater placement affect coverage. Describe the areas where your current radios fail so the recommendation addresses the actual problem.
