What kind of two-way radio does a food and beverage operation need?
Start with the wettest, loudest, coldest place a radio has to work, because that area sets the durability floor for the whole fleet. Everything else can step down from there.
- Front of house, small, quiet, discreet. Servers, hosts, expo, and bar staff need a radio that disappears under an apron and pairs with an earpiece.
- Commercial kitchen and dish pit, sealed and washable. Steam, grease aerosol, splash, and sanitizer end unsealed radios quickly.
- Production, packaging, and cold storage, durable, loud, and glove-friendly, with battery performance that holds up in the cold.
- Management and multi-unit, reach beyond one building, which usually means LTE push-to-talk rather than on-site radio coverage.
Most operations end up with two or three models rather than one. That is normal and usually cheaper than over-specifying a submersible radio for every server.
How many radios does a food and beverage operation need?
Count the stations that must always be reachable, then add the supervisors who move between them. A radio assigned to a station, expo, dish, dock, line lead, stays useful across a shift change. A radio assigned to a person walks out at the end of the night.

Choose radios by area and role

Prep, receiving, and general floor staff
When an operation needs more channels than a license-free radio provides but does not need a submersible body, the Motorola CLS1410 is a compact licensed radio that suits prep, receiving, and back-office use.
Production lines, cold storage, and shift leads

Which radios survive a wash-down kitchen?
Sealing is the single specification most often got wrong in food and beverage. A radio that is merely "water resistant" will usually survive rain but not a directed spray or a sanitizer bucket.
- Confirm the rating on the exact model and battery. Ingress protection is a property of the assembled radio, battery, and accessory port cover together. A submersible radio with the accessory cover off, or with a non-sealed speaker microphone attached, is no longer sealed.
- IP67 means dust-tight and submersible for 30 minutes at 1 meter (3.3 ft). The EVX-S24 carries that rating. It is a durability rating, not a food-contact or sanitation certification.
- Accessories carry their own rating. Pairing a sealed radio with an unsealed remote speaker microphone puts the weakest link on the outside of the radio, which is exactly where the spray lands.
- Clean radios the way the manufacturer specifies. Chemical sanitizers and high-pressure spray can defeat seals and cloud displays even on a rated radio.

Do food and beverage radios require an FCC license?
It depends on the model, and mixing the two types in one fleet is common and fine.
- License required: UHF business radios operating on FCC Part 90 frequencies, including the CLS1410, SL300, and EVX-S24. These need an appropriate business-radio license and programming before they are handed to staff.
- License free: the CURVE DLR110 and DLR1020 operate on 900 MHz and can be used without an FCC license. Check coverage and fleet size before assuming they are enough for a larger site.
- Subscription network: WAVE PTX LTE radios do not need a separate frequency license, but they do require a service plan.

A practical food and beverage channel plan
A channel plan keeps ticket traffic from burying a receiving call or a maintenance issue. A typical starting structure looks like this.

Write the plan down and post it at the charger rack. An undocumented channel plan lasts exactly as long as the staff who set it up.
Where radios lose signal in a kitchen or food plant
Food facilities are unusually hostile to radio signal, and the dead spots are predictable.
- Walk-in coolers and freezers. Insulated metal panel walls behave like a shielded box. Coverage frequently drops to nothing once the door closes.
- Stainless steel and tiled prep areas. Hard reflective surfaces cause multipath, which shows up as audio that breaks up when someone takes a step.
- Basements, cellars, and below-grade storage. Common in older restaurant buildings and a reliable dead spot.
- Between buildings. A commissary, a separate production building, or a yard is beyond a handheld's practical range.
Test with the coolers closed and the line running, not on a quiet morning with the doors open. If a critical area fails, the fix is a repeater or a designed system rather than buying radios with a bigger number on the box.
Noise, hearing safety, and hands-free audio
Kitchens and packaging lines run loud, and staff have their hands full or gloved.
- Remote speaker microphones bring audio to the shoulder and keep the radio protected on the belt. In wash-down areas the microphone must be rated too.
- Noise-canceling or heavy-duty headsets suit packaging lines, blast chillers, and any area where hearing protection is already required.
- Discreet earpieces work well in the dining room and poorly on a production floor.
- Turning the volume up is not hearing protection. If an area needs PPE, the radio audio has to work with the PPE, not compete with it.
What two-way radios do not do for food safety
Radios are a coordination tool. They are not a food-safety monitoring system and not a HACCP control.
A radio will not log a cooler temperature, will not alert you when a critical control point drifts, and does not satisfy a monitoring or verification requirement in a food-safety plan. What radios do well is shorten the gap between someone noticing a problem and the right person arriving to fix it, a cooler alarm heard, a delivery rejected at the dock, a spill cleared before service. Keep your temperature logging, monitoring, and corrective-action records in the systems built for them, and use radios to move people.
The same applies to emergencies. Radios do not replace a monitored fire alarm or a call to 911. Decide in writing who calls emergency services and who runs the radio net, keep one channel clear for urgent traffic, and include radios in evacuation drills.
