Oil and gas sites punish radio equipment in ways no other industry does. A wellsite, a compressor station, a refinery unit, and an offshore platform all combine flammable vapor, constant machinery noise, weather exposure, and crews spread across ground that has no cellular coverage. The decision that matters most is not range or channel count. It is whether the radio in a worker's hand is certified to be carried into a classified hazardous area at all, and whether every battery, antenna, and accessory attached to it carries the same certification.

Short answer: If your crew works inside a classified Division 1 or Division 2 area, they need an intrinsically safe radio, and the rating only holds if the battery, antenna, and audio accessory are the approved intrinsically safe parts for that exact model. What makes a two-way radio intrinsically safe?

An intrinsically safe (IS) radio is designed so that it cannot release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere, even when the device fails. That is a different engineering approach from an explosion-proof enclosure, which contains an ignition rather than preventing one. In practice, an IS radio limits current and voltage, controls surface temperature, seals or restricts the battery contacts, and is certified as a complete assembly rather than as a bare radio.

In the United States, portable two-way radios for hazardous locations are certified to TIA-4950, the standard that replaced the older Factory Mutual approval regime for this equipment class. A UL listing to TIA-4950 typically covers Class I, Class II, and Class III Division 1 locations, flammable gases and vapors, combustible dust, and ignitable fibers. The exact classes, divisions, and gas groups a given model is approved for are printed on the radio label and in its specification sheet, and those are the only claims worth relying on for a compliance file.

Internationally the equivalent frameworks are ATEX in Europe and IECEx globally, which describe hazardous areas as Zones rather than Divisions. Which Motorola radios are intrinsically safe?

Three Motorola platforms are sold in intrinsically safe variants, and all three are stocked here. This is deliberately a short list, an intrinsically safe radio is a certified configuration, not a feature you can add to a standard radio later, so the choice is narrower than a general commercial fleet.

Every one of these is offered in both a standard and an intrinsically safe model. They are separate part numbers. Ordering "an R7" does not get you an IS R7. Do you need an intrinsically safe radio, or just a rugged one?

Not every worker on an oil and gas payroll needs an IS radio, and they cost meaningfully more than standard commercial handhelds. The test is the area classification of the ground the user actually stands on during a normal shift, not the industry on the company letterhead.

Your site's area classification drawing is the authority, not this table. Classification varies by operator, by process, and by jurisdiction, and it is reviewed by people who are accountable for it. Where a role crosses in and out of a classified area during a shift, safety officers, maintenance techs, contractors, visiting inspectors, issue the IS radio. A worker will not swap handhelds at a boundary line, and assuming they will is how a non-rated device ends up inside a live unit.

How many radios does an oil and gas operation need?

Count by simultaneous roles on shift, then add spares for charging rotation and for contractors. Radios in energy operations are usually assigned to a position rather than a person, because positions are staffed around the clock and people are not.

These are planning ranges for a first conversation, not a quote. Turnarounds and shutdowns are the number that catches operators out: a plant that runs 40 radios day to day may need 150 for six weeks, and contractor crews will arrive without IS-rated equipment of their own. Plan the surge fleet before the turnaround schedule is locked, not after.

Choose radios by role

Rig floor and drilling crews

Prioritize glove operability, loud audio, and survivability. The Motorola R5 in its intrinsically safe variant is the workhorse choice: large controls, no display to break, and a channel plan the crew learns once. Pair it with a heavy-duty remote speaker microphone so the radio itself stays clipped and protected.

Safety, HSE, and emergency response

Use a display radio. Safety personnel monitor multiple talkgroups, need to see who is calling, and are the users most likely to invoke emergency signaling. The R7 with display is the usual pick, and its emergency button, man-down, and lone-worker features are all worth configuring properly rather than leaving at defaults.

Plant operations and control room

Operators moving between classified units carry IS handhelds; the control room typically runs a base station or a display portable on a desk charger. Keep the control room on every operational talkgroup and on the emergency channel, and give it the ability to make an all-call.

Pipeline, field, and transport crews

Radio-to-radio coverage between remote locations is not realistic. Contractors and turnaround crews

Contractors are the most common gap in an otherwise sound radio program. Either issue them site radios from a controlled pool, or verify their own equipment is IS-certified and programmed to your plan before they badge in. A contractor with an uncertified handheld in a live unit is your exposure, not theirs.

The battery and accessories are part of the certification

This is the single most misunderstood point about intrinsically safe radios, and the one most likely to void a rating in the field. The certification applies to the assembled combination of radio, battery, antenna, and attached accessory, not to the radio body alone. Fit a standard battery to an IS radio and the assembly is no longer intrinsically safe, regardless of what the label on the back says.

For the R7, the intrinsically safe batteries are the PMNN4809 TIA4950 2850 mAh and the PMNN4810 TIA4950 3200 mAh. Both are IMPRES batteries, so a fleet charger will report their real health rather than guessing. Standard R7 batteries such as the PMNN4807 are physically compatible and are not IS-rated, which is exactly why loose spare batteries in a truck box are a genuine hazard.

Audio accessories follow the same rule. IS-rated remote speaker microphones such as the RM780 and the smaller RM730 are ordered specifically in their IS variants. Practical controls that work:

  • Buy IS batteries in a visually distinct color or mark them, so a standard battery is obvious on sight.
  • Store IS and standard spares in separate, labeled locations, never the same drawer.
  • Put the IS part numbers on the purchasing record so a replacement ordered in twelve months is the right one.
  • Check battery and accessory part numbers during the same inspection that checks the radio.

Charging, programming, and servicing an intrinsically safe radio

Charging is a hazardous-area activity and is not permitted inside a classified location. Chargers, multi-unit charging banks, and programming stations belong in an unclassified area, the office, the shop, the control building, or the camp. Battery swaps in the field carry the same restriction: change a battery outside the classified area, not at the wellhead because it is closer.

Servicing matters too. Opening an IS radio, substituting a non-approved part, or having a repair done by an unauthorized shop can invalidate the certification. Licensing, channel plans, and interoperability

MOTOTRBO radios including the R5, R7, and Ion operate on FCC Part 90 business frequencies and require a license and programming before they are used. If your operator already holds a license, new radios are programmed to that existing plan. If not, the application is straightforward and we can coordinate it and ship the fleet pre-programmed.

Build the channel plan around functions rather than crews:

  • One talkgroup per operating area or unit, so routine traffic stays local.
  • A dedicated emergency talkgroup that carries no routine traffic at all.
  • A maintenance or contractor talkgroup so a turnaround does not swamp operations.
  • A supervisor or all-call path for site-wide announcements.
  • Privacy codes and digital encryption where commercial or security sensitivity requires it.

Multi-operator sites need one more step: agree in advance which channel visiting contractors, drilling companies, and service crews use to reach site control. An emergency where three companies are on three unconnected radio systems is a coordination failure that is entirely avoidable at the programming stage.

Covering remote sites, pipelines, and lease roads

Portable-to-portable range in an energy environment is far shorter than open-field figures suggest. Steel process structures, tank farms, terrain, and distance all degrade it. Three approaches cover the realistic cases:

  • A repeater gives reliable coverage across a plant, a large pad, or a terminal. This is the standard answer once a site outgrows simplex, and it should be designed against the actual footprint rather than a rule of thumb.
  • LTE push-to-talk covers distance that on-site radio simply cannot, pipeline right-of-way, lease roads, field technicians, and haul drivers. The TLK110 and TLK150 run on WAVE PTX with nationwide reach and no separate frequency license.
  • A mixed fleet is what most midstream operations end up with: IS handhelds inside the fence, LTE PTT between locations, and talkgroups bridged so dispatch hears both.

Test coverage before you commit. A site walk with loaded radios, at the far corners and inside the structures that matter, tells you more than any coverage map.

Inspection, records, and what auditors look for

Treat radios as safety equipment on the site inventory, because in a classified area that is what they are. A workable routine:

  • Pre-shift: confirm charge, confirm the correct talkgroup, confirm the correct IS battery is fitted.
  • Periodic: inspect the housing, antenna, and battery contacts for damage; a cracked case is a failed radio, not a cosmetic issue.
  • Records: keep model and IS part numbers, certification documentation, and repair history for each radio in the fleet.
  • Training: document that users know the emergency procedure, the channel plan, and the battery rule.

Radios do not replace a gas detection system, an alarm, a permit-to-work process, or a call to emergency services. They are how people coordinate around an incident. Write down who calls emergency services and who runs the radio net, and include radios in drills so the routine is practiced rather than assumed.

Common mistakes when buying radios for oil and gas

  • Ordering the standard model. IS is a separate part number. Confirm it on the quote and on the label at delivery.
  • Mixing batteries. One standard battery in an IS radio voids the rating for that assembly. Separate stock and label it.
  • Skipping accessories. A non-rated speaker mic on a rated radio is the same failure as a non-rated battery.
  • Buying by advertised range. Range figures do not survive a tank farm. Design coverage; do not assume it.
  • Forgetting contractors. The largest uncontrolled population on your site during a turnaround.
  • Charging on site. Chargers belong in the unclassified area, always.
  • No emergency channel discipline. An emergency talkgroup carrying routine chatter is not an emergency talkgroup.

Can I charge an intrinsically safe radio in a hazardous area?

No. Charging, battery changes, and programming must happen in an unclassified area, an office, shop, control building, or camp. Site chargers and multi-unit charging banks should be located accordingly, and the rule needs to be part of user training, not just the manual.

Do intrinsically safe radios need an FCC license?

Yes. MOTOTRBO radios including the R5, R7, and Ion operate on FCC Part 90 business frequencies and require a license and programming.
