A pharmaceutical site is not one radio environment, it is three. A QC lab needs a radio that is quiet and small enough to work at a bench. A gowned operator moving through an airlock needs something that can be worn under coveralls and worked without taking a hand off what they are carrying. A packaging hall needs a radio loud enough to be heard over a filler and sealed enough to survive a wipe-down. Buying one model for all three is the mistake that leaves half a fleet in a drawer.
What a two-way radio is not, in a regulated facility
Read this before anything else, because it decides how the system gets specified and who has to sign off on it.
A two-way radio is a voice tool. It is not an environmental-monitoring system, not a GMP control, and not part of a validated process. Nothing on this page is cleanroom-rated, sterilizable, or certified to any ISO 14644 class. No radio we sell carries a GMP qualification, and adding one to a suite does not change that suite's classification.
What that means in practice:
- Radios belong in non-classified and controlled-not-classified areas, labs, gowning and de-gowning rooms, airlock approaches, corridors, warehouse, packaging, utilities, engineering, and the plant floor.
- Whether a radio may cross into a classified suite is a decision for your quality unit, based on your own cleaning validation and particulate control, not something a vendor can grant.
- If a radio does enter a controlled area, it goes through your existing procedure for any other portable equipment, the same wipe-down, the same logging, the same change control.
- A radio does not replace a call point, an alarm, a fire system, an evacuation system, or a documented deviation record. It helps people coordinate around those things.

How many radios does a pharmaceutical facility need?
Count the roles that must never be unreachable, not the headcount. In a pharma facility that list is usually shorter than people expect: the shift supervisor, each production or packaging line, QC on the floor, warehouse and dispensary, engineering and utilities, EHS, and security or reception.

These are planning ranges, not purchase requirements. Shift pattern is the variable most people forget: a 24-hour site running three shifts needs radios that hand over on a charger rather than one per person, and it needs enough spares that a battery failure never takes a line off the air. Add roughly 15 percent above your headcount count for spares and charger rotation.

Choose radios by area: lab, cleanroom support, and plant
Lab and QC
Bench work rewards small and quiet. Staff are often gloved, frequently at a fume hood or an instrument, and the radio must not become another thing to put down. The Motorola CLP1080e weighs 2.38 ounces, runs eight channels, and is designed to be worn on a belt or lab coat and worked through an earpiece rather than a speaker, so a call does not carry across an open lab. The Motorola SL300 Non Display is 0.87 inches thick with no screen, changing channels on a rocker switch and confirming the channel by voice, which keeps eyes on the work. Where no FCC licensing is wanted at all, the Motorola CURVE DLR110 runs license-free on 902 to 928 MHz with ten channels.
Cleanroom support, gowning and airlocks
This is the area that decides which radio you buy. The constraints are wearability under a gown or coverall, operation without fine motor control through gloves, and tolerance of repeated wipe-down.
The Motorola CLP1080e has a large push-to-talk button that can be found by feel and VOX hands-free operation, so a gowned operator carrying a tray never has to press anything. The Motorola TLK25 is screenless and keypad-free by design, a wearable WAVE PTX communicator with the fewest controls and openings of anything in the lineup, running over site Wi-Fi with an optional LTE model for coverage beyond it. The Motorola EVX-S24 is rated IP67 and submersible to one meter (3.3 ft) for thirty minutes, which is the honest answer for anywhere a radio gets wiped down aggressively and often. Plant, packaging and utilities
Noise and shift length take over here. The Motorola R2 is the workhorse: SINC+ advanced noise cancellation to cut through a filler or a capper, 4 watts on UHF and 5 on VHF, IP55, and 19.5 to 26.5 hours of battery depending on pack, enough for a twelve-hour shift plus changeover. The Motorola EVX-S24 covers wet and washdown areas at IP67 with 256 channels and DMR Tier II. Multiple buildings and multiple sites
On-site radios do not reach another building across a campus, and they certainly do not reach another site. The Motorola TLK25 runs push-to-talk over Wi-Fi, with an LTE and Wi-Fi model that fails over to the nationwide WAVE PTX network when staff move beyond wireless coverage. That is the mechanism that actually connects a site director, a quality lead and a warehouse manager who are never in the same building. It needs a service plan rather than an FCC license.
Do pharmaceutical radios require an FCC license?
It depends on the band, and it is worth resolving before you buy quantity because it changes the lead time.
- License-free. The Motorola CURVE DLR110 operates on the 902 to 928 MHz ISM band with frequency-hopping spread spectrum. No FCC license, no frequency coordination, no recurring airtime fee. Useful for a contract lab or a leased suite that does not want to be added to a parent company's license.
- Licensed. The CLP series, the SL series, the EVX-S24 and the R2 operate on FCC Part 90 business frequencies and require a business radio license held by the organization and tied to specific frequencies.
- License not required, service required. The Motorola TLK25 runs over Wi-Fi and LTE rather than your own frequencies, so no FCC license applies, but a WAVE PTX subscription does.
Large pharmaceutical companies frequently already hold a Part 90 license covering the site, sometimes from a fleet installed a decade ago. Ask facilities or EHS before you file anything new; adding radios to an existing license and programming them onto frequencies already in use is faster and cheaper than a fresh application. Cleaning, wipe-down, and what IP ratings actually promise
This is where pharmaceutical buyers get the most misleading information, so be precise about it.
An IP rating describes ingress protection against solids and liquids under a defined test. It says nothing about chemical compatibility, nothing about particulate shedding, and nothing about whether a surface can be disinfected to any standard. A sealed radio tolerates repeated wiping better than a vented one, that is the whole claim.

Three rules that matter more than the rating:
- Check the agent against the manufacturer's cleaning guidance, not against the IP number. Repeated isopropyl alcohol contact degrades some housings and keypad legends over time regardless of sealing.
- Never spray a radio directly and never soak the charging contacts. Wipe with a damp cloth, dry the contacts, and let it seat on the charger dry.
- Accessories are the weak point, not the radio. Earpieces, cables and fabric-covered mics are far harder to clean than the housing. Prefer sealed, cable-free accessories in any area with a cleaning rota, and budget to replace earpieces rather than clean them.
A practical pharmaceutical channel plan
Most sites need fewer channels than they build and enforce them less than they should. A workable starting plan:

Keep channel 1 clean. If routine production traffic drifts onto the all-call channel, people stop monitoring it, and it is the one channel that has to work during an actual incident. Write the plan down, laminate a card on the charger bank, and cover it in induction for every new starter and contractor.
Privacy codes and interference-eliminator tones are not encryption. They stop you hearing the business next door; they do not stop the business next door hearing you.
Where radios lose signal in a pharmaceutical facility
Pharma buildings are unusually hostile to RF, because most of what makes a suite controllable also blocks radio. Test every one of these on site, with the actual radio, before committing to quantity:
- Stainless-clad cleanroom walls and ceilings, and the return-air chases behind them
- Airlocks and pass-throughs, which are effectively small metal boxes
- Cold rooms, freezer farms and stability chambers
- Autoclave and sterilization bays with heavy shielding and steel doors
- Utility floors, plant rooms and interstitial ceiling voids full of ductwork
- Basements, tank farms and below-grade warehouse levels
- Racked warehouse aisles, where dense stock absorbs signal along the aisle
- Older buildings with foil-backed insulation or lead-lined analytical rooms
If coverage fails in one or two spots, an accessory, a different antenna or a different band usually fixes it. If it fails across a building, more handhelds will not help, that is a system design question, and a repeater, a distributed antenna system or LTE push-to-talk is the honest answer. Gowning, PPE, and hands-free operation
The best radio in a gowned area is the one an operator never has to touch. Practical rules:
- Specify the carry method before the radio. A radio worn under a gown is unreachable; one worn over it may be unacceptable to your quality unit. Resolve that first, it usually points straight at a wearable, screenless model.
- Prefer VOX or a large tactile PTT over anything that needs a fingernail. Gloved hands cannot work a small button or a menu.
- Avoid loose cables and lanyards around rotating equipment and in gowning rooms. Bluetooth pairing on the SL3500e, or the cable-free wearable form of the TLK25, removes the problem rather than managing it.
- Set a house volume and use earpieces in labs. An open speaker in an analytical lab is a nuisance, and in a quiet suite it is a distraction during a critical step.
- Standardize one accessory per area. Mixed earpieces across a fleet is the single biggest driver of "the radios don't work" complaints.
Confidentiality and what not to say over the air
Pharmaceutical traffic carries things that should not be broadcast: batch numbers tied to an investigation, deviation details, formulation and process parameters, yields, product names ahead of launch, and anything involving a named individual.
Digital models offer varying levels of protection. The EVX-S24 supports 40-bit ARC4 digital encryption in DMR mode; the R2 offers Enhanced Privacy; the SL3500e supports Basic and Enhanced Privacy; the CURVE DLR110 uses frequency-hopping, which resists casual interception without being encryption; the analog CLP1080e offers none.
None of that changes the rule. Write a short list of what does not go over the radio, put it in induction, and use the radio to ask someone to come to a phone or a terminal instead. Encryption is a control against interception; discipline is the control against everything else, and it is the one an auditor can see you have.
How to manage the fleet after installation
Radio fleets on regulated sites fail in a specific way: they drift out of the asset register, batteries age out together, and nobody can find the programming file when a replacement arrives two years later.
- Number every radio, put it on the asset register, and sign it out by role and area, not by person. A radio issued to a role survives staff turnover.
- Dock everything on a shared charger bank at end of shift. On a 24-hour site, radios hand over on the charger rather than one per head.
- Replace batteries on a schedule, not on failure. A radio that dies mid-shift trains people to stop relying on the system.
- Run a monthly radio check on every channel, including the airlocks, cold rooms and warehouse aisles you tested at purchase. Log it, it is the same discipline as any other equipment check and it takes ten minutes.
- Keep the programming file and the frequency record with the license documentation. Adding a radio a year later is trivial with it and a service call without it.
- Include radios in your change control when you re-partition a suite or move a wall. Coverage that worked last year may not survive the refit.
