A car dealership is really four businesses sharing one property. The showroom needs to look and sound calm. The service drive runs on appointment times. The shop is loud, greasy, and full of steel. The lot is outdoors, sometimes across a street, and full of vehicles that move all day. A radio fleet that works for a dealership has to serve all four without making the sales floor sound like a warehouse.
How many two-way radios does a car dealership need?
Count the posts that must always be covered, then add the managers who move between them. A radio assigned to the service drive stays useful when the service writer goes to lunch; a radio assigned to a person leaves in a jacket pocket at 6pm.

These are planning ranges, not purchase requirements. Lot acreage, whether the overflow lot is across a road, the number of service bays, a body shop or detail building, and a parking deck all change the recommendation more than employee count does. A 40-car showroom with one flat lot needs a very different fleet from a store with the same headcount and a three-level deck.
Choose radios by department and role

Showroom and sales floor
On the floor, the radio should be invisible and inaudible to customers. That means a lightweight radio worn under a jacket with a single-wire earpiece, not a belt radio with the speaker turned up. Service drive and service writers
The service drive is the busiest handoff point in the building. Writers are outside in weather, walking customers around a vehicle, and constantly checking whether a bay or a loaner is free. A slim radio that survives a full day of that, with clear audio and a channel selector a writer can find without looking, does the job. Service bays, techs, and the body shop

Do dealership two-way radios require an FCC license?
Most UHF business radios operate on frequencies licensed under FCC Part 90. Models such as the CP100d, BPR50dX, SL300, and R2 generally require an appropriate business-radio license and programming for the frequencies your store is authorized to use.
- License-required radios: UHF business radios on licensed Part 90 frequencies, including the CP100d, BPR50dX, SL300, and R2.
- License-free on-site radios: The CLS and CLP series and the CURVE DLR110 operate on shared license-free business frequencies, which is why they are common on showroom floors and in smaller stores.
- Subscription-network radios: TLK110 and TLK150 radios use WAVE PTX service over LTE and need a service plan rather than a separate frequency license.
A practical dealership channel plan
One shared channel works right up until a sales question steps on a service-drive call. Separating traffic by department is the single cheapest improvement most dealerships make. A typical starting structure looks like this:

CTCSS and DCS tones reduce unwanted audio from other users on the same frequency, but they are not encryption and do not make a channel private. Anything involving customer financial details, deal terms, or key security should stay off open radio traffic regardless of tone settings. Where dealership radios lose signal
Coverage problems on a dealership property come from the shape of the property, not from a radio's advertised range. Test the places your team actually needs to talk:
- The service bay and lift area: steel lifts, vehicle bodies, and roll-up doors reflect and absorb signal, and a radio that is fine on the drive can drop two bays in.
- The body shop and paint booth: booths are effectively sealed metal rooms and are one of the most reliable dead spots on any dealership property.
- The parts department and mezzanine: dense metal shelving above or behind the shop creates pockets that a quick walk test misses.
- Multi-level parking decks: concrete decks between levels attenuate far more than open-air distance does, and the lowest level is usually the worst.
- The back lot and overflow lot: the far corner of a large lot, and especially an overflow lot across a road, is where porters most often go silent.
- Detail, wash bays, and outbuildings: separate structures with metal roofs behave like small warehouses rather than like part of the main building.
- A second rooftop: another store in the group is beyond on-site radio coverage. That is an LTE push-to-talk problem, not a bigger-antenna problem.

Keys, loaners, and lot control, the handoff problem
Most of what a dealership actually says on the radio is a handoff: a key, a vehicle, or a customer moving from one person to another. Getting those exchanges onto a consistent format saves more time than any hardware upgrade.
- Use stock numbers, not descriptions. "Pull 4471 to the drive" is unambiguous. "The grey SUV out back" is not, and on a full lot it is three radio calls instead of one.
- Name lot zones and post them. Front line, service overflow, deck level 2, back row. Zone names have to be understood by a porter on day one.
- Confirm loaner and demo key handoffs by radio, then log them. The radio call speeds up the exchange; it is not the record. Key control stays in your key system.
- Give the shuttle a fixed check-in. A shuttle driver on a TLK150 or TLK110 can confirm departure and return without the service drive guessing.
- Keep deal terms and customer financial details off the radio. Customers on the drive and on the floor can hear more than staff assume, and a privacy tone is not encryption.
Noise, audio, and accessories
In a dealership the accessory choice varies more by department than the radio does, because the showroom and the shop have opposite requirements.
- Single-wire earpieces are the default on the sales floor and the service drive. Customer-facing staff should hear the radio without the customer hearing it.
- Remote speaker microphones suit porters, lot attendants, and parts staff, bringing audio to the shoulder and keeping the radio protected on the belt.
- Heavy-duty or noise-canceling headsets belong in the shop, the body shop, and the wash bay, where impact tools and compressors make a belt speaker useless.
- Multi-unit chargers per department beat scattered single chargers. One bank on the service drive and one in the shop makes it obvious at close which radios came back.
- Volume is not a substitute for hearing protection. Where the shop already requires hearing protection, use audio accessories designed to work with it.
Radios during incidents and emergencies
A dealership runs several small emergencies a year that are not fires: a lift accident in the shop, a customer who collapses on the showroom floor, a vehicle taken off the lot, a demo that does not come back. Radios are how the store coordinates the response. They are not how the store summons it.
- Name one person per shift who calls 911. The most common failure is four people assuming somebody else already called. Put the name on the shift board, not in a policy binder.
- Give the all-call an owner. One manager per shift decides what goes out store-wide. Everything else stays on the department channel.
- Use plain language, not codes. Porters, techs, and new salespeople turn over constantly. A code nobody was trained on is worse than no code.
- Rehearse the four realistic scenarios, shop injury, customer medical event, vehicle theft from the lot, and an unreturned test drive, so the first radio call carries location, what happened, and what is needed.
- Keep one channel clear during an incident. Routine parts and porter traffic moves off until the situation is closed.
Two-way radios support coordination, but they do not replace 911, a monitored alarm, or a security system. A radio will not detect lot theft, summon police, or replace a call to emergency services after a shop injury or an incident on the drive. The store's plan should define who calls emergency services, who owns the all-call, and which channel stays reserved for urgent traffic.
Managing the fleet across departments
Dealership fleets fail for organizational reasons more than technical ones: radios cross department lines, staff turn over, and nobody owns the chargers. A little structure prevents most of it.
- Assign radios by post, not by person. A numbered radio belongs to the service drive, the shop, or the lot, and passes cleanly between shifts and new hires.
- Make one manager per department the radio owner. Split ownership across sales and service is the most common reason a dealership fleet quietly shrinks.
- Keep an inventory log. Model, serial number, assigned post, battery condition, and repair history.
- Plan batteries as consumables. Batteries in a six-day-a-week store wear out long before the radios do. Budget replacements rather than replacing radios early.
- Keep pre-programmed spares. A spare on the shelf means a new porter or a failed radio does not cost a Saturday.
- Re-test coverage after a renovation. A new service drive canopy, an added deck level, a body shop expansion, or a new overflow lot can undo coverage that worked last year.
