Crew two-way radios are internal business radios. They carry the operational traffic that keeps a vessel running: a cabin steward calling housekeeping, a chief engineer reaching the engine room, a maître d' coordinating a dining rotation, a gangway officer managing embarkation.
Putting internal crew chatter on marine VHF channels congests a safety service. Putting distress traffic on a business radio means nobody outside the ship hears it. Keep the two systems separate, on separate equipment, with a written policy on which traffic goes where.
Do crew radios on a cruise ship need an FCC license?
It depends on the radio, and the split matters more for a cruise operator than for a shore-based buyer. Two models on this page avoid licensing in US and Canadian waters; the rest are ordinary licensed business radios.
- License-free in the US and Canada: the Motorola DLR1060 and Motorola CURVE DLR110 run on the 900 MHz band, which is license-free in US and Canadian jurisdiction.
- Business radio license required: the Motorola SL300, CLP1080e, R2 and EVX-S24 operate on business VHF/UHF frequencies and need the normal license for the jurisdiction you operate in.
A vessel that sails internationally is not governed only by the FCC. Confirm your requirements with your flag state administration and with each port authority you call at before standardising a fleet on any one band.
Do LTE and push-to-talk-over-cellular radios work at sea?
No, and this is the single most important thing on this page. Push-to-talk-over-cellular radios, including the Motorola WAVE PTX family, carry voice over a mobile carrier network rather than over their own radio hardware. The moment the ship leaves carrier coverage, usually within tens of miles of shore, they stop working entirely.
This is why no PoC radio appears in this lineup. Those radios are excellent for shore-based fleets, terminal-only operations and vehicle fleets that never leave coverage, and they are a genuinely poor fit for a vessel that sails.
The failure mode is what makes it expensive: a PoC radio performs perfectly during a dockside trial and demonstration, then goes silent on the first sea day, after the fleet has been bought and the crew trained. If a supplier proposes cellular push-to-talk for shipboard crew use, ask them to demonstrate it offshore.
Some very large vessels do run network-based push-to-talk over their own shipboard Wi-Fi rather than a carrier. That is a valid architecture, but it depends entirely on genuinely complete vessel-wide wireless coverage and is a systems design conversation rather than an off-the-shelf purchase. Which radios work best for onboard crew coordination?
For crew working inside the vessel, choose slim, discreet, guest-appropriate radios over high-power ones. Interior range is limited by steel bulkheads and decks rather than by distance, so raw wattage buys less than you would expect.

Shoreside teams need range and durability rather than discretion. Baggage handling, provisioning, gangway control and terminal traffic all happen over open distances and in weather.

Are cruise ship radios waterproof enough for deck use?

- Battery endurance beyond one shift. Cruise shifts are long and split. Size batteries for the longest realistic day, not the nominal rating, and budget spare batteries per radio.
- Water and corrosion resistance. Salt air is corrosive even where there is no spray. Rinse and dry radios used on open decks, and expect shorter accessory life than on a shore site.
How do I get radio coverage across an entire vessel?
No handheld radio covers a large ship end to end on its own, steel decks block vertical propagation, and that is a physics problem rather than a product problem. Large vessels need infrastructure.
The standard answer is a repeater and distributed-antenna system that relays handheld traffic between decks and fire zones. On a large ship this is designed around the fire-zone layout rather than bolted on afterwards, and it is what lets a single fleet of handhelds behave like one connected system from the bridge to the engine room.
On smaller vessels, expedition ships, river cruise vessels, day-excursion boats, handhelds alone are usually sufficient, and the money is better spent on spare batteries and better audio accessories than on infrastructure.
How many radios does a cruise operation need?
Count active roles per shift, not headcount, then add spares. Radios are shared across rotations, so a 900-crew vessel does not need 900 radios.
Start by counting the positions that must be reachable at any moment: bridge support, engineering watch, housekeeping supervisors, food and beverage leads, guest services, deck and security. Add roughly 15 to 20% spares to cover charging rotation, damage and loss. Order multi-unit chargers to match, charger capacity, not radio count, is usually what constrains a shift changeover.

Two rules keep the plan intact. Channel 1 stays clear for traffic that genuinely concerns the whole vessel, and every channel above stays off marine VHF. None of these is a distress channel. What about international waters and foreign ports?
Radio spectrum rules are national, so a radio that is legal in Miami is not automatically legal in every port you call at. This is the most commonly overlooked compliance risk in a cruise radio deployment.
