Gate, ticketing, and guest services
These posts need radios that are light, simple, and quick to teach, because the people carrying them often change every event. Battery life through a long doubleheader matters more than channel count. Keep the medical channel disciplined. If routine chatter migrates onto it, the one call that matters will be the one that gets stepped on. Brief every radio user on which channel is theirs and which channel is not.
Where radios lose signal in a stadium or arena
Sports venues are built from the materials that are hardest on radio signal: poured concrete, structural steel, and long buried tunnels. Test these locations on site before the first event, with the radios you actually intend to buy.
- Loading tunnels, service corridors, and the tunnel to the field or court
- Locker rooms, training rooms, and officials' rooms below grade
- Press box, camera positions, and upper deck concourses
- Concrete parking structures and the far end of overflow lots
- Mechanical rooms, kitchens, and walk-in coolers behind concessions
Also test with a full house if you can. A crowd of ten thousand bodies absorbs signal, and a venue that works fine on a walkthrough Tuesday can behave differently on Saturday. If coverage fails in a location you genuinely need, the fix is a repeater or a designed system, not more handhelds.
Radios during weather delays, medical, and evacuation events
The value of a radio fleet is not routine traffic, it is the twenty minutes when something goes wrong. Lightning delays, a serious injury, a fan medical emergency, or a full evacuation all depend on staff hearing the same instruction at the same time.
Practical steps that hold up on event day: rehearse the weather delay call before the season, agree who is authorized to stop play, keep the medical channel clear, and make sure whoever meets arriving EMS at the gate is on the radio and knows the address to give.
Game day versus tournament and multi-venue operations
A single stadium on game day is a coverage problem: one property, lots of concrete, many staff. A tournament is a different problem entirely. Fields may be miles apart, site leads need to reach a central organiser, and no on-site repeater covers all of it.
The usual answer is a hybrid. Keep on-site UHF or 900 MHz radios for the crews working within each venue, where they are cheapest and have no recurring cost, and give site leads, transport, and the tournament director LTE push-to-talk on the TLK110 or TLK150 so the coordination layer works regardless of distance. How to manage the fleet between events
Sporting event fleets have a specific problem that offices do not: the radios sit unused for weeks, then get handed to fifty people in one afternoon. Build the routine around that.
- Charge and inventory the fleet the day before, not the morning of. Batteries self-discharge over a long off-season.
- Number every radio and run a signed hand-out and hand-back sheet at the staff entrance.
- Keep a small pool of charged spares at the command post rather than one spare per post.
- Replace batteries on a schedule. Two to three seasons of heavy use is a realistic service life.
- Label each radio with its channel assignment, so a volunteer who has never held one starts on the right channel.
- Store radios off the charger at room temperature during the off-season, then bulk charge before the first event.
