Airport and FBO two-way radios coordinate ground operations, line service, ramp, fuel, front desk, custodial, maintenance and security. Sizing is driven by the number of roles that must stay reachable across an open airfield, not by headcount, and airports lean on vehicle-mounted mobile radios far more than most industries because so much of the work happens from a truck.
Ground operations only. These are not aircraft radios. Every radio on this page is a land mobile business radio. Air-band communication with pilots and ATC uses the aeronautical VHF service at 118 to 137 MHz, which requires an FCC Aircraft or Aeronautical Ground station license and type-accepted air-band equipment. Nothing Two Way Radio Gear sells transmits on air band. If you need to talk to aircraft, you need a separate air-band radio and a separate license.
Do airport ground radios work on aircraft frequencies?
No. Land mobile radios and air-band radios are two different licensed services and the equipment is not interchangeable.
- Air band (aeronautical mobile service) runs 118 to 137 MHz VHF using AM modulation, is licensed by the FCC under Part 87, and is used to talk to aircraft, ground control and tower.
- Business land mobile radio runs on VHF and UHF Part 90 frequencies using FM, or over LTE for WAVE PTX devices, and is used to talk to your own staff.
The two use different modulation and different licenses, so a Part 90 business radio physically cannot be programmed onto air band, and doing so would be unlawful even if the hardware allowed it. Airports that need both run both: air band for the flight line personnel who are authorized to speak to aircraft, and a business radio fleet for everything else on the ground. How many two-way radios does an airport or FBO need?
Count the roles that must always be reachable, then add spares for shift overlap and charging rotation. As a starting point:

Two adjustments matter more at airports than elsewhere. First, plan around vehicles: fuel trucks, tugs, de-icing rigs, ops trucks and shuttles are better served by a mounted mobile radio with an external antenna than by a portable on a belt. Second, plan around the airfield perimeter, not the terminal footprint, a portable that works fine in the terminal may not reach the far end of a taxiway.

Do airport ground radios require an FCC license?
Most of them do. The rule follows the radio, not the airport:
- Part 90 business radios, CP100d, SL300, R2, R7, CM200d and CM300d all operate on licensed VHF or UHF business frequencies and require an FCC Part 90 business radio license, plus programming to your assigned frequencies.
- WAVE PTX LTE radios, the TLK110 handheld and TLK150 mobile talk over a managed nationwide LTE network on a service subscription. They do not need a separate frequency license because they are not using your own spectrum.
- Air band, a separate Part 87 license and separate equipment entirely. See the first section.
If the airport is on federally obligated land or you are coordinating with a tower, an airfield operator or a TSA-regulated area, check your frequency assignment with airport operations before you buy. Two Way Radio Gear can program radios to frequencies you already hold.
How should an airport plan its channels?
Separate channels by function so that routine chatter never blocks a safety call. A workable baseline:
- Channel 1, Ramp / line service. Aircraft marshalling, fueling, chocks, GPU, lav and water service.
- Channel 2, Front desk / customer service. Arrivals, crew cars, catering, hangar requests.
- Channel 3, Maintenance and facilities. Terminal, hangar doors, lighting, snow and airfield maintenance.
- Channel 4, Security and emergency. Kept clear; used for perimeter breaches, medical calls, fuel spills and alarms.
- Channel 5, All-call. Every radio monitors it for events that affect the whole operation.
Digital MOTOTRBO radios such as the R2, R7 and CM series give you two talk paths in each 12.5 kHz channel, which is the practical way to add a department without adding a frequency. Write the plan down, label the channel positions the same way on every radio, and keep the emergency channel in the same position across the fleet.
Why mobile radios matter more at airports than in most industries
This is the single biggest difference between an airport fleet and, say, a retail or property management fleet. Airport work is vehicle-based: fuel trucks, tugs, belt loaders, de-icing rigs, ops and maintenance trucks, and landside shuttles. A mounted mobile radio beats a handheld in three ways that matter on an airfield.
- Power. A mobile transmits at substantially higher power than a portable, which is what covers an airfield measured in thousands of feet.
- Antenna. An externally mounted antenna on a vehicle roof is far more efficient than a stubby antenna held at waist height beside a body.
- Uptime. A mobile runs off vehicle power. It does not die halfway through a shift and it never needs a charger rotation.
The CM200d is the straightforward choice for most airport vehicles. The CM300d steps up the power and channel capacity for larger airfields. The TLK150 is the option when a vehicle needs to stay in contact beyond the property line, a shuttle running to a hotel, or a parts run, because it works anywhere the LTE network reaches.
Where do airport radios lose coverage?
The usual dead zones at an airfield:
- Inside hangars, large steel structures block UHF badly, especially with the doors closed.
- The far taxiway and runway ends, simple distance beats a handheld before it beats a mobile.
- Jet bridges, baggage tunnels and basements, concrete and steel.
- Fuel farms and remote pads, usually the furthest point from wherever the antenna is.
- Parking structures and landside garages, the same problem every property faces.
Test these locations on site before committing to a fleet size. If handhelds fail at the perimeter, the answer is normally a repeater with a properly sited antenna, or LTE push-to-talk, not simply buying more portables. Ramp noise is a second, separate problem: jet blast and GPU noise routinely exceed what a radio speaker can overcome, so budget for a remote speaker microphone or a headset for anyone working near running aircraft.
How do radios fit airport security and emergency procedures?
Radios are the coordination layer during a fuel spill, a medical call on the ramp, a security or perimeter breach, a weather hold, a de-icing surge or an aircraft incident. They speed up the response, but they do not replace anything you are already required to have.
Radios do not replace 911, the airport emergency plan, ARFF dispatch, a monitored fire alarm system, air traffic control, or any communication method mandated by your Part 139 certification, your airport operator or the TSA. Treat the radio fleet as the way your own staff coordinate while those systems do their job. Keep one channel clear for emergencies, brief every new hire on which channel that is, and test it during your regular drills.
What accessories does ramp and line-service work require?
- Remote speaker microphones, essential on the ramp. A radio on a belt under a high-vis vest is unusable near a running engine.
- Hearing-protection headsets, for anyone regularly working around aircraft under power.
- Multi-unit chargers, one bank per crew room so shift changeover is a swap, not a hunt.
- Spare batteries, airports run long shifts and cold ramps drain batteries faster.
- Vehicle mounts and external antennas, the mobile radios above need both; specify them with the radio, not afterwards.
- Carry cases and heavy-duty belt clips, radios get dropped on concrete.
