Towing & Recovery Two-Way Radio System Buying Guide

A towing company needs two different things from a radio system, and most buyers only think about one of them. Drivers are spread across a whole metro or several counties, so they need coverage that does not care about distance, that is nationwide LTE push-to-talk. The yard, the impound lot, and the shop are all in one place, so they need cheap, license-based handhelds that keep working when the network does not. Almost every towing operation ends up running both.

This guide covers how to choose between the two, what to put in the truck, how to install it so it survives a tow truck's electrical system, what the FCC requires, and what a radio will not do for you.

Start with one question: how far do your trucks run?

Everything else follows from this. Coverage, not features, is what separates a system that works from one that costs money and gets left in the charger.

The mistake worth avoiding: buying a higher-wattage mobile radio to fix a coverage problem caused by distance. Going from 25 W to 45 W helps at the margins; it does not turn a 15-mile system into a 60-mile one. If your trucks routinely leave the market, that is an LTE question, not a wattage question.

How many radios does a towing company need?

Size the fleet from trucks and posts rather than from headcount. Drivers rotate, but a truck that is on a call always needs to be reachable, and the yard always needs someone on the other end. A rule that holds up for most operators:

  • One mobile radio per truck, permanently mounted and wired to truck power.
  • One handheld per operator who works away from the cab, recovery scenes, hookups, and yard moves.
  • Two to four yard handhelds for impound, storage, and the shop.
  • One dispatch position, whether that is a base station, a console, or a dispatcher on a handheld.
  • Two spares per ten radios, pre-programmed and charged.

These are planning ranges, not purchase requirements. Shift overlap, whether drivers share trucks, how many yards you run, and any radios already in service all move the number. Where the fleet is on WAVE PTX, count service seats rather than frequencies, the cost model follows the radio, not the channel.

Build the system by where people are

On the road, the truck

A tow truck needs a permanently mounted radio, not a handheld on the seat. A mobile radio runs off truck power, drives a proper roof antenna, and is loud enough to hear over a diesel and a running PTO.

  • The Motorola TLK150 is the default choice for towing. It is an LTE mobile, so a driver 90 miles out on a motor-club call is on the same channel as the yard. It is available with an ignition sensor, which powers the radio with the truck and stops it draining the battery overnight, worth specifying on a truck that sits between calls.
  • The Motorola CM300d is the licensed alternative for operators who work one market and do not want a monthly service line. Up to 99 channels, 25/40/45 W depending on band, analog or digital.
  • Drivers who leave the truck at a scene still need to be reachable. Pair the mobile with a handheld, a TLK110 for LTE fleets, an R7 for licensed ones.

In the yard, impound lot, shop, and storage

Yard traffic is short-range and constant: moving vehicles, releases, customer pickups, shop work. There is no reason to pay monthly airtime for a conversation that happens inside one fence line.

  • The Motorola BPR50dX is the practical yard radio, 64 channels, analog and digital, IP55, up to 23 hours on a charge, and rugged enough for a lot.
  • The Motorola R7 is the step up where audio matters most, loud enough to cut through a running wrecker, and available in UHF, VHF, or 800/900 MHz.
  • The TLK100 and TLK110 also work in the yard, and keep everyone on one system if you would rather not run two.

Dispatch and the office

Dispatch is where a radio system either earns its keep or becomes a second thing to monitor. Specifying the TLK25: it ships in two configurations, Wi-Fi only, and LTE & Wi-Fi. Only the LTE & Wi-Fi model is usable on the road. The Wi-Fi-only model is for staff who stay inside covered premises; put it on a driver and it will go silent the moment the truck leaves the lot.

Installing a mobile radio in a tow truck

The antenna does most of the work, and the power feed is what kills radios that were installed in a hurry.

  • Antenna: a roof-mounted antenna with a proper ground plane, as close to the center of the roof as the light bar allows, beats a fender or glass mount every time. On a truck with a tall boom or a light bar, keep the antenna clear of both, metal directly beside an antenna distorts the pattern in the direction it matters.
  • Power: run the radio directly from the battery on a correctly gauged fused feed, not from an accessory circuit. A wrecker's electrical system is brutal, winch, PTO, lift, and cold-start draw will brown out a radio hanging off an accessory tap.
  • Ignition sensing: on the TLK150, specify the ignition sensor so the radio does not sit awake draining the battery while the truck is parked.
  • Microphone: mount it within reach without the driver looking away from the road. Consider a hands-free setup on trucks where handheld operation is restricted.
  • Interference: space the radio antenna away from GPS, telematics, and camera antennas. They degrade each other, and the symptom usually shows up as intermittent poor audio rather than an obvious fault.

A practical towing channel plan

Most towing fleets run comfortably on five channels. What matters is not the count but that a driver knows which one to reach for at two in the morning without thinking about it, and that one channel is deliberately kept empty.

Channel 4 is the one operators skip and later wish they had kept. A channel that is quiet by policy is the only one guaranteed to be usable the moment a recovery goes wrong.

On a WAVE PTX fleet these are talkgroups rather than channels. The plan is identical, but it is configured in the WAVE PTX portal instead of programmed into each radio, which means it can be changed centrally without collecting the fleet. Mixed fleets should keep the numbering consistent across both so a driver moving from a licensed truck to an LTE one is not relearning the plan.

FCC licensing for a towing company

Conventional radios, the CM300d, BPR50dX, and R7, transmit on FCC Part 90 business frequencies and require a license in the company's name before they are used. It covers a defined geographic area, so expanding into a neighboring market is a licensing question before it is a hardware question. A license runs ten years.

What two-way radios do not do

Worth being direct about, because towing is a genuinely dangerous job and it is easy to over-read what a radio provides.

  • A radio is not a replacement for 911. If an operator is struck, threatened, or injured on a shoulder, someone calls emergency services. A radio shortens the time before another person knows, that is the whole of the claim.
  • An emergency button is not monitored. Pressing it transmits an alert to other radios on your system. Nobody outside your company receives it. It is not a lone-worker monitoring service.
  • A radio is not GPS fleet tracking or tow-management software. WAVE PTX shows location to a dispatcher on the console; it does not dispatch calls, price jobs, or keep records.
  • A radio is not an ELD and satisfies no FMCSA hours-of-service or recordkeeping requirement.
  • Coverage figures are not guarantees. Stated ranges assume favorable conditions. Terrain, buildings, and where a truck is parked all change the real number.

Decide in writing who calls emergency services during an incident and who runs the radio net, keep one channel clear for urgent traffic, and configure man-down or lone-worker features deliberately rather than assuming they are switched on.

What two-way radios are best for a towing company?

It depends on how far your trucks run. Inside a single market, a licensed in-cab mobile such as the Motorola CM300d gives instant push-to-talk with no monthly airtime, paired with BPR50dX handhelds for the yard. Do towing radios need an FCC license?

Conventional radios do. How far will a tow truck radio reach?

A licensed mobile radio reaches roughly 10 to 15 miles truck-to-truck in typical conditions, and further through a repeater, but terrain and buildings change that substantially. LTE push-to-talk radios are not limited by distance at all, they work anywhere with cellular coverage, which for most towing operations is the more useful answer.

Can a driver use a two-way radio while driving?

A properly mounted mobile radio with a fixed microphone is generally treated differently from a handheld phone under hands-free driving laws, but state law varies and CDL rules are stricter than rules for lighter vehicles. Confirm what applies in the states your trucks run, mount the microphone within easy reach, and use a hands-free setup where handheld operation is restricted.

Should the yard be on the same system as the trucks?

Not necessarily, and it is often cheaper if it is not. Yard traffic is short-range and constant, so licensed handhelds with no monthly airtime usually make more sense there, while drivers stay on LTE. If you would rather run one system, put everyone on WAVE PTX and accept the per-radio service cost for the yard as well.

What happens if there is no cell signal at a scene?

An LTE push-to-talk radio needs coverage to work, so in a genuine dead zone it will not transmit. Operations that regularly work canyons, rural interstate, or underground structures should keep a licensed system as a fallback rather than relying on LTE alone. It is worth mapping the handful of places your trucks actually lose service before deciding.

Do radios make roadside work safer?

They shorten the time between something going wrong on a shoulder and someone else knowing about it, which is genuinely valuable. They do not summon help on their own, do not replace a call to 911, and do not monitor an operator. Treat the radio as one part of a roadside safety procedure, not as the procedure.
