Which teams in a church actually need radios?
- Safety and security team. The first group to equip. They need their own channel and the ability to reach the lead pastor's assistant and the front desk without waiting.
- Parking and traffic. The furthest team from the building and the one most likely to find the edge of your coverage.
- Greeters and ushers. Working in view of the congregation, so discreet earpieces matter more than raw output.
- Children's ministry and check-in. Needs a fast, reliable path to a parent in the service and to the safety lead.
- Production, AV, and worship. Often already on a wired or wireless intercom; a radio bridges them to the rest of the building.

Do church radios require an FCC license?
It depends on the band. Most UHF and VHF business radios, the CP100d and R2, for example, operate on FCC Part 90 frequencies and require a license plus programming before use. How do you keep radios quiet during a service?
This is the requirement that separates a church system from every other industry. A radio that chirps during a prayer is a radio that gets left in a drawer.
- Earpieces for anyone visible. One-wire surveillance-style earpieces keep audio private and the microphone at the collar.
- Turn off roger beeps and keypad tones in programming, not just on the volume knob.

What channel plan works for a church?
Separate the traffic that must be heard immediately from the traffic that can wait. A workable starting plan:

Where do church radios lose signal?
Walk the property with a test radio before you buy the fleet. The usual dead zones are basements and lower-level classrooms, nurseries behind block walls, elevators and stairwells, the far corners of a parking lot, gyms and fellowship halls with steel structure, and older sanctuaries with thick masonry. If coverage fails in a spot that matters, the fix is a repeater or a designed system, not more handhelds.
How do you cover a large campus or a second location?

- Check radios before the first service. A two-minute radio check catches a dead battery or a bumped channel knob before it matters.
- Review the system annually. New buildings, added service times, a school or daycare on campus, and growth all create new coverage requirements.
