A transportation operation is three communication problems wearing one uniform. Drivers need to reach dispatch from a moving vehicle without touching a phone. Dispatch needs to reach every driver at once. And the terminal, the dock, the yard, the shop, needs to run its own traffic without stepping on the road net. The right fleet is rarely one radio model. It is a mobile radio in the cab, a handheld at the terminal, and a deliberate decision about which of the two coverage technologies your routes actually require.
How many radios does a transportation fleet need?
Count vehicles and posts, not employees. A tractor that is on a route needs to be reachable whoever is driving it, and a dock that runs three shifts needs the same radio available to all three. Size from the assets and the positions, then add spares.

These are planning ranges, not purchase requirements. Add a spare mobile and two spare handhelds per terminal on top, and remember that on a WAVE PTX fleet the recurring cost follows the radio count, so spares carry a service line as well as a purchase price.
Licensed mobile radios or LTE push-to-talk?
This is the decision that determines everything else, and it is decided by your routes rather than by your budget. Get it wrong in either direction and you either pay a monthly fee you did not need or buy a fleet that goes silent forty miles out.

The mistake to avoid is buying a higher-wattage mobile radio to solve a range problem that is really a coverage problem. Wattage helps at the margins. It does not put a hill or fifty miles of interstate inside your footprint.
Choose radios by role
Drivers in a local service radius
A vehicle-mounted mobile radio runs off truck power, drives an external antenna, and stays audible over engine and road noise, all three are things a handheld on the passenger seat does badly. The Motorola CM200d is the straightforward choice for a local fleet that needs a handful of channels and clear audio. The Motorola CM300d steps up the power and channel capacity for fleets covering a wider area or running more than a couple of talkgroups.
Drivers running regional or interstate routes
Once a driver leaves the coverage of your own system, licensed radio stops being the tool. LTE push-to-talk connects the vehicle over a managed nationwide network instead. Terminal, dock, and yard crews
Terminal work is loud, outdoors, and constantly interrupted, and it is where most transportation operations are still shouting or texting. Do transportation radios require an FCC license?
It depends entirely on which of the two technologies you chose above.
- License-required radios: conventional UHF and VHF mobiles and handhelds on FCC Part 90 frequencies, including the CM200d, CM300d, CP100d, and R2. These need an appropriate business-radio license and programming for the frequencies you are authorized to use.
- Subscription-network radios: the TLK150, TLK110, and TLK25 use WAVE PTX service over LTE and need a service plan rather than a separate frequency license.
- A license is geographic. A Part 90 license authorizes specific frequencies in a specific area. Expanding into a new terminal city is a licensing question before it is a hardware question.
A practical fleet channel plan
One shared channel works right up until a routine load question steps on a driver reporting a breakdown on a shoulder. Separating traffic costs nothing and is far easier to do at programming time than later.

CTCSS and DCS tones reduce unwanted audio from other users on the same frequency, but they are not encryption and do not make a channel private. If your traffic includes customer or high-value load detail, ask about digital privacy and encryption during system design.
Mounting, antennas, and hands-free driving
More transportation radio complaints trace back to installation than to the radio. A correctly specified mobile radio on a poor antenna performs worse than a cheaper radio installed properly.
- The antenna does most of the work. A roof-mounted antenna with a proper ground plane will out-perform a glass-mount or fender mount every time. Center of the roof is the target.
- Power it from the battery, not the accessory circuit. Fused directly to the battery, correctly gauged, so the radio does not brown out on a cold start or drop when the lift gate runs.
- Mount the microphone within reach without leaning. A driver who has to look away from the road to find the mic will use their phone instead.
- Hands-free driving laws. A properly mounted mobile radio with a fixed microphone is generally treated differently from a handheld phone, but state law varies and CDL rules are stricter. Confirm what applies where your drivers run, and consider a hands-free headset or a VOX-capable setup where it does not.
- Do not stack antennas. A radio antenna mounted too close to a telematics or ELD antenna can degrade both. Space them, or have the install planned around the existing hardware.
Radios, driver safety, and what they do not replace
Radios shorten the time between something going wrong on a route and someone knowing about it. That is genuinely valuable and it is also the whole of the claim.
- A radio does not replace a call to 911, and it does not summon anyone on its own. An emergency button transmits an alert to other radios on the system, nothing more.
- A radio is not a monitored lone-worker device. If drivers work alone at night or in remote areas, that is a policy and a monitored service, and radios support it rather than being it.
- Define in writing who calls emergency services and who runs the radio net during an incident.
- Reserve one channel for urgent traffic and keep routine dispatch off it.
- Man-down and lone-worker radio features must be configured deliberately. They are not defaults.
Running the fleet over time
Vehicle radios live in a harsher environment than almost anything except construction, and they are usually forgotten until one stops working.
- Assign mobiles to trucks, handhelds to roles. A radio numbered to a tractor stays with the tractor through driver changes; a terminal handheld belongs to the dock, not to a person.
- Re-check the install at PM intervals. Antenna base corrosion, a chafed coax run, and a loose power connection are the three most common causes of a "the radio died" ticket.
- Keep pre-programmed spares. A spare mobile and two spare handhelds per terminal means a failure costs an hour, not a shift.
- Plan batteries as consumables. Handheld batteries in a multi-shift terminal wear out well before the radios do. Budget replacements instead of replacing radios early.
- Re-scope when you add a terminal or a lane. New geography is a licensing and coverage question, and it is far cheaper to answer before the trucks are running than after.
