Motorola R5 Resources

Get a new Motorola R5 on the air in a few minutes.

1. Charge the battery fully before first use. A first charge from empty typically needs several hours in the supplied charger.
2. Power the Motorola R5 on and set every radio in the fleet to the same channel so the whole team hears the same traffic.
3. Press and hold the Push-to-Talk button, pause briefly, then speak across the microphone rather than into it. Release to listen.
4. Fit an earpiece or speaker microphone if the team works in a noisy space - it is the single biggest clarity upgrade on any radio.

The Motorola R5 is programmed with MOTOTRBO CPS 2.0 over a Motorola programming cable.

• Install MOTOTRBO CPS 2.0 on a Windows PC.
• Connect the radio with the correct programming cable for this model and power it on.
• Read the radio first so you have a working copy of its current codeplug before you change anything.
• Make your changes, then write the codeplug back to the radio.
• Clone the finished codeplug to the rest of the fleet so every radio matches.
• Because this model transmits on licensed business frequencies, the frequencies programmed into it must match those on your FCC licence.

The issues we are asked about most on the Motorola R5, and what to check first.

• Cannot hear the team: confirm every radio is on the same channel. A single radio left on the wrong channel is by far the most common cause.
• Short range: fit a fully charged battery, check the antenna is tight, and remember that steel, concrete and elevator shafts cut range hard.
• Short battery life: charge fully in the supplied charger. Batteries are consumable - most fleets replace them every couple of years.
• Audio muffled or distorted: clean the microphone and speaker ports and check the earpiece or speaker microphone is fully seated.
• Radio will not power on: reseat the battery and confirm the charger contacts are clean and making contact.
