What is MOTOTRBO CPS 2.0?
CPS 2.0 is the configuration tool for MOTOTRBO radios. Every MOTOTRBO radio stores its settings in a file called a codeplug, which holds the channel list, frequencies, colour codes, talkgroups, button assignments, scan lists, power levels and enabled features. CPS 2.0 is how that codeplug is read out of the radio, edited on a PC, and written back.
The practical point for a business owner: a MOTOTRBO radio out of the box is not configured for your site. Frequencies, talkgroups and button layout are set during programming, and that step is what turns a box of radios into a working system. Is CPS 2.0 the right software for my radio?
Not every Motorola radio uses CPS 2.0. Motorola splits its portable radios into distinct families, and each family has its own programming path.

Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a programming session fails before it starts: the software opens, the cable is fine, and the radio simply is not recognised because it belongs to a different family.
What you need before you start
- A Motorola Solutions account with CPS entitled to it. CPS 2.0 is not a public download. It is distributed through Motorola's software entitlement portal, and the software has to be attached to your account before the download appears. Dealers can arrange this entitlement for radios purchased through them.
- The correct programming cable. Cables are series specific. A cable that works on a CP series radio will not necessarily fit SL300 display and non-display radios or an R series radio, because the accessory connector differs between families. - A Windows PC. CPS 2.0 is Windows only. There is no supported macOS or Linux build. Running it in a Windows virtual machine on a Mac works, but USB passthrough for the programming cable has to be configured or the radio will not appear.
- Administrator rights. Installation writes drivers, so a standard user account will usually fail partway through.
How to download and install MOTOTRBO CPS 2.0
- Sign in to your Motorola Solutions account and open the software entitlement portal.
- Locate MOTOTRBO CPS 2.0 in your entitled software list. If it is not listed, the entitlement has not been applied to your account yet, and that is the step to resolve first.
- Download the installer package. It is large, because it bundles the device drivers and the firmware support files as well as the application.
- Right click the installer and run it as administrator.
- Accept the driver installation prompts when they appear. These are the USB drivers that let Windows see the radio. Declining them produces a working application that can never connect to hardware.
- Reboot before first use. The drivers are not reliably active until you do.
Install the application before you plug the radio in for the first time. If Windows sees the cable before the drivers are present, it can bind a generic driver to it, and you then have to remove that binding in Device Manager before the correct driver will take.

Reading, editing and writing a codeplug
- Connect and power on. Attach the cable to the radio and the PC, then switch the radio on. The radio should appear in the device list in CPS.
- Read the radio. This pulls the current codeplug off the device.
- Save the original immediately, before any edit. Give it a filename that includes the radio serial number and the date. This file is the only way back if an edit goes wrong, and on a fleet it is the only record of what each unit was set to.
- Make your edits. Change channels, frequencies, talkgroups, scan lists or button assignments as needed.
- Write to the radio. Do not disconnect the cable or power the radio off during a write. An interrupted write can leave the radio in a state that needs recovery.
- Verify on the hardware. Key up on each changed channel and confirm the radio behaves as intended before you program the next unit.
For a fleet, program one radio, verify it fully in the field, then use that verified codeplug as the template for the rest. Cloning an unverified codeplug across thirty radios means making the same mistake thirty times.
Why will my radio not connect?
In our experience the failure is almost never the CPS application itself. Work through these in order.
- Wrong cable. The most common cause. A physically similar connector is not the same as a compatible one.
- Driver not installed or bound wrong. Open Device Manager with the radio connected. If you see an unknown device or a generic serial device rather than the Motorola entry, the driver is the problem.
- Wrong software family. A business radio connected to CPS 2.0 will not be recognised, because it needs its own software.
- Radio not fully powered. A low battery can be enough to power the display but not to hold a stable programming session.
- USB hub in the path. Connect directly to the PC. Passive hubs cause intermittent programming failures that look like software faults.
- Firmware mismatch. A radio on much newer or much older firmware than the CPS build expects may need a firmware update before it can be read.
When should I use Radio Management instead?
CPS 2.0 programs one radio at a time. That is fine for a handful of units and painful past about twenty. Radio Management is Motorola's fleet tool: it holds configurations centrally, applies changes across many radios, and keeps a record of what each device is running. If you are running a multi site operation, or you rotate radios between crews, Radio Management is worth the setup cost. For a single site with one channel plan, CPS 2.0 is the simpler answer.
